Reverse Worth It Wednesday: You Tell Me!

The following is a part of a new feature here. Blogs and the internet greatly influence what I buy and where I shop. Buying something that ends up ineffective is one of my pet peeves - so getting a recommendation from someone honest and real is always a welcome occasion. I avoid being completely materialistic, but consumerism is part of life for most of us. Buying things that work and that you love avoids wasting money and products - I'm sure I'm not the only one who's bought a product that ended up not working and got shoved to the back of the cabinet, unused.

I want to spread the news about wonderful services and products to you all - and for you to do the same. Post this on your blog as well! I'd love to hear about what works for you.

worth it

For this week's edition of Worth It Wednesday - I want you to help me out.

Sound good?

Here's the deal - I lost my digital camera a month or so ago and am DYING without one. I literally complain all. the. time. to Mike about not being able to capture things.

Since I've broken one camera and lost two cameras, Mike was a little hesitant about me spending money on a new one. (Geez, he's so paranoid.)

Then, one day, I peered over his shoulder while he was on the computer and found him researching GOOD cameras for me - really good cameras, like, DLSRs and advanced point and shoot cameras.

I KNOW! Best husband ever, right?! (Even if he complains when all I want to do is take pictures on our walk. Heh.)

But, he won't let me buy one until I really research cameras to know what's the best camera at the most affordable price.

This is where you come in: What camera do you have? Do you love it? Should I get it? Does a DLSR really take better pictures that makes it worth the price?

I'm looking for a moderately priced camera. I've had 3 Samsung point and shoots before that took amazing pictures (I know, weird!)

Give me advice! So I don't have to REALLY research! :)

  1. I have the Sony DSC-H5, which has since been replaced with the H7, I think. I love it. It's a step below a DSLR and much more compact, but still a fantastic camera with a great lens and it has a macro mode. It costs a little more than basic point and shoots, though.

DSLRs, however, are totally worth it. They take great pictures and they allow a lot more autonomy. But you have to consider that they're also a lot bulkier so if you're looking for something you can just stick in your pocket or purse, they might not be the best choice.

  2. ooh i hope you find the perfect camera.
and that other people can help you out more than i can.
i managed to drown my camera in beer this summer, and now use my girlfriend's camera for all photo op's. and since i am technologically impaired, i have no idea what kind of camera it is. "small, skinny, and cute" would be how i describe it. ;)

  3. I got a Nikon Coolpix s550 in July to replace my older, bulkier Nikon Coolpix 800 (circa 2000). It was worth it: it takes lovely pictures while still fitting easily into my purse or even a pocket. Nikon is a great company to go with, I have not been disappointed with any of their products.

  4. I just got my first DSLR in December and it definitely takes better pictures than my point and shoot. I got the Canon Rebel Xti and it's the perfect beginner DSLR. I love it!

  5. "Does a DLSR really take better pictures that makes it worth the price?"

Not really. Wedding photographers just like to carry them around instead of point and shoots because we have inferiority complexes ;)

But seriously, if you are in it to better your skills...and are willing to learn, rather than just use an automatic setting... bump up the equipment a notch. If you are iffy on the price, I'd (highly) suggest an older model Canon Rebel. Not the Xsi that just came out, but serach ebay for a canon rebel xt dslr (beware, there are also film version floating about, make sure it is the digital SLR).

You'll be able to TONS with it. The lenses will be the hard part. I'd suggest the 50mm f/1.8 for around $70 to go with it... even if it come with a kit lens (probably an 18-55mm ) . The things you will learn with a prime lens are priceless.

That's my two cents. Good luck.

  6. I have the Canon 40d and I absolutely LOVE it. It was a bit spendy, but I'm glad I splurged for it.

I agree with EmilyPie. You can take great pictures with a point and shoot, but I feel so much cooler carrying around my big beefy Canon.

  8. Wow you lost it? I thought you just got one a few months ago? I have a Canon SDL 1000 and I like it. I wish it had image stabilization though. I am willing to bet I'll be looking for a new one in six months. I like the slim ones for my purse.

  9. I have a Sony right now. It's a small one. I have my heart set on a Nikon DSLR. One day...

  10. I am obviously a huge fan of DSLR's all my pictures on my blog come from my Canon 40D. I'd say for a beginner DSLR the Canon Rebel is great. I agree with Emilypie, it is worth it if you are willing to learn.

  11. I did tons of research a few years ago before I bought my very basic digital camera. It's a HP 317 and was around $150. I love it and it takes great pictures, but like you I have been longing and strongly hinting that a DSLR would be a great Christmas gift. The pictures really are that much better.

  12. I have a DSLR, I have the Nikon D40 and LOVE it!! It takes a lot better pictures than my other digital camera which was a regular Canon Digital one. My favorite part about it is that there is no delay when you take pictures. I would definitely recommend it!

  13. Oooooh! New camera! Weeee!

I'm in love with my Canon Rebel. Like, I want to make out with it sometimes, especially when I happen to take an awesome photo without even really trying. I don't have the fancy shmancy new Rebel (XSi or something like that) but I have the one just under it. (I want to say it's the XT or the XA or the...oh, nevermind. I don't know.) It was cheaper enough that I had to go with it. And I adore it.

I'd say, join the DSLR revolution! Do it! Especially if your hubs seems okay about the price.

Can't wait to see what you decide!

  14. Camera talk, how I love you.

I wish I had a DSLR! We have a really awesome vintage Canon A-1 from 1985. It takes amazing pictures, but I would kill for a new digital one. Well, maybe not kill, but, you know. I want one really bad.

As for my travel camera that I take everywhere so I don't miss a photo opportunity, I have a Canon PowerShot SD750. Not the absolute best camera out there for sure, but I love it.

  15. I have a Sony CyberShot. It is great for what I need it for - taking pictures of me and my friends. But I wish I had a DSLR...they seem to make everything look better!

Good luck on the hunt. Keep us posted as to what you get!

  16. I have actually been doing tons of research on the DSLRs for a few months and I'm about to take the plunge and buy a NIKON D80! I have also talked to a couple of amateur "hobby" photography buffs who already own the camera and love it. If this is out of your price range, I'm sure the D-40 or D-60 would also be great - good luck!

  17. I personally use a little Olympus digital; nothing too fancy but it does have several features that yield good photos. As for DSLR's, every good photographer I know uses a Canon. When I was in journalism school I found that all the photojouranlists with no art background used Nikons, and all those who dabbled or were educated in art used Canons. I've never used a Nikon, so I can't say which is better, but that was my observation. My brother just got a Canon Digital Rebel of some kind that's pretty sweet. Anyway as far as good DSLRs go, Nikon or Canon are usually what the pros go with, as far as I know.

  18. Man, that sucks you lost your camera -- but that's great your hubby was looking for a new on for you online! Yayay!! Ok, I know nothing about cameras, especially fancy DSLRs and all that jazz. My parents gave us a Canon powershot SD800 IS and I love it but like I said, I don't know anything about cameras and it's my first digital. Good luck in the hunt!

  19. I got the Canon Rebel Xsi off of amazon. It was on sale at the time and not much more than the xti. Also, one thing to research is the memory cards. mine came with the SD card, while the xti is compact flash, so we would have had to buy a special adaptor for the compact flash if we would have bought the xti. In the end it would have been about the same price, so going with the xsi worked out well for us.

  20. I realize I'm late to the game here, but here's my 2 cents anyway.

I have 2 cameras. My point and shoot is a Sony Cybershot which I love. It takes great pictures with virtually no delay.

My other camera is a DSLR, the Canon Digital Rebel XT. I got it this summer and it's amazing. I thought the Cybershot took nice pictures...the DSLR blows them away. 100% worth it!

  21. I know I'm really, really late on this, but as a photographer, I feel the need to let you know what I think is best. ;)

I'm a Canon girl, so I definitely recommend any of their DSLRs. I shot with a Canon Digital Rebel. It's a great little camera and takes nice photos and the color is CORRECT. (I've had problems with Nikon on this, but it might just be me being picky.) A 10D, 20D, etc. would be good, too. And they aren't that ridiculously expensive anymore, which is awesome.

Let me know when you decide to get one. If you need advice or someone's brain to pick, I'd be happy to help out!
