Everyone Deserves A Trader Joe's Binge.

So, my parents never acknowledged the sparkling nubbin on my nose when I saw them ALL DAY Saturday.

They always told me in high school and college that if I got a belly button piercing or tattoo, college would be paid for by me alone. So I did what any reasonable person would do. I got my belly button pierced before leaving for college. And promptly hid it from them for, oh, six years now. (Mom, Dad – if you happen to read this: Surprise! But at least it was my one and only rebellious action, right?)

After getting my nose pierced Thursday, I continued my thrilling weekend by packing all. freaking. day. on Friday.

Yep, I’m a fiercely competitive runner. Watch out, old men, you may just get beat by a tiny 24-year-old. I somehow managed to get second place in my age group. (I’m not going to tell you my time – because I am SLOW.) When it was all over, I felt sort of awesome. Having a pint glass emblazoned with, “WINNER” helped, I think.

After the race, the Big Move commenced. The big move consisting of two-point-two miles. With seven people and three vehicles – it was the easiest move ever. Seriously. I’m considering renting out my parents and three siblings to help other people. When it was over, we rewarded ourselves with a Trader Joe’s binge and some ice cream.

My family was impressed with our new little house. (Okay, it’s the bottom floor of a house – but what are you supposed to call that? Is it an apartment? Suite?) It’s seriously cute and gorgeous all at once – when we finish unpacking, I’ll show you. It’s within 10 minutes walking of the library, a yoga studio, over a dozen different restaurants, coffee shops, and pubs, and an amazing movie theater. It's Walk Score? Eighty-freaking-nine, baby.

I'm so excited to be able to walk places in the evenings and weekends when we want to go out to eat instead of driving.
How awesome is that?

  1. Trader Joes = awesome

Can't wait to see pictures of your new place. :)

I love being able to walk to places. I'm hoping when I move to NC I'll be able to walk to a post office and grocery store. Thanks for that website!

  2. When I got my nose pierced, it took my dad several visits before he noticed it. Parents are just oblivious to things like that.

    & I want to see your house/suite/apartment. ;]

  3. I think parents see what they want to see. And if they're so opposed to piercings that they would threaten to withhold college support over them, then I'm sure they did NOT want to see.

  9. I'm so excited for you that your new place lets you walk to all those other places. I heart walking in a big way :) My house only scored a 32, but it's within walking distance to my school which is my primary destination most days, and and I have a fitness center and indoor pool in my neighborhood (the score did not reflect these things) too.

  11. at least you listened. I waited only 3 months after my 18th birthday and my dad said he could've done it for free and saved me money.

  12. Ha, I hid my belly button piercing from my folks too. It came out a couple years after I'd gotten when we went on holiday and I wore a bikini without thinking about it!

And yay for moving being easy :)

  13. Being near a Trader Joe's is one of the few things I miss about the job I quit.

I am glad to hear the move went well! Sounds like a lovely little, um, flat(?).

  16. Clearly, you handled your body modification much better than I. At 18, I followed through with my nose piercing threat. Immediately afterwards, I went home and, before anyone could (not) notice my nose, I practically publicized it to the entire neighborhood. My confession was not, unfortunately, an announcement of my adulthood, but more sheepishly a terrified cry, fearful that my wrists were actually going to be slapped this time.

Needless to say, my mother said it looked like I had a zit, my father rolled his eyes, and I still adorn a gleaming tiny gem 7 years later.

Just found your blog, and enjoying it very much! I also scored in the 80's for my walking score - thanks for helping me affirm my living situation!

  17. My parents also told me that if I got a tattoo or piercing outside of my ears before I left for school, I would be cut off. So I did it after I left.

  18. When I decided to get a tattoo, my mom went with me to pick it out even though she wasn't thrilled about it.

Congrats on an easy move. It IS very exciting to live in a fun neighborhood like that.

Then, unfortunately, I was proven a little bit wrong. You guys beat us. Our apartment is an 80. BURN. Ha.

  21. hhhhaaahaha, i love that your fam was all passive aggressive about your nose ring and has absolutely no reaction. Or do you think they honestly didn't notice it? either way thats hilarious.
I also pierced my belly button as an act of rebellion before leaving for college and was scared to tell my mother...3 mos later I found out I was pregnant with Isaiah. yeahhhh, guess which announcement all of the sudden sounded like no big deal then? LOL! ohh man :P
I can't wait to see your new "house!"
